Asterix: The Mansions of the Gods (Asterix and Obelix: Mansion of the Gods) review

Posted : 7 years, 6 months ago on 3 October 2016 11:10 (A review of Asterix: The Mansions of the Gods (Asterix and Obelix: Mansion of the Gods))

It's very difficult to control a large empire with many different cultures. So, rather than crushing those striving to keep their own culture, a much better solution is to gradually degrade it with money.

Caesars plan in this movie mirrors that of modern China, where the government has encouraged millions of Mandarin speaking Han Chinese to move into areas such as Tibet, Hong Kong and Xinjiang. With them comes money and many accept them because they are good for business.

Echoing the movie, the Chinese government have given houses and land to ethnic Tibetans and others in mainland China. Eventually, the search for money and security often wins out over the desire to maintain a cultural and religious identity and these people are peacefully absorbed into the one country culture; supporting, rather than rebelling against the government.

But is sacrificing tradition, history and belief in order to take part in an oppressive capitalist society worthwhile?
